Yes, we were eating. Yes, this sucker was hanging around for food… At least he gave me something more to shoot!

This shot makes me want to go straight to the camera store to buy a nifty-fifty. None of my lenses are capable of getting this shot… either from a DOF perspective or the lightening quick shutter speed. Nicely composed; I like this photo.

As for your subject matter… those guys are the same the world over. Food, food, food. One track minds, all of ‘em.

James — I highly recommend it. I think the 50mm f1.8 is easily the best value for money lens there is, but if you have a bit of extra that you can spend, the f1.4 is even better. I think having one of them is almost essential, I barely shoot with anything else. Not only is the DoF a lot of fun, but it helps you think about composition etc a bit more when you can’t just zoom in. I got mine as a birthday present, so maybe you can add that to your wish list for such an occasion?

I look at it as a long-term investment, so the extra cash on the 1.4 doesn’t dissuade me much… just puts it off by a little bit. I don’t think I’ll finish spring without one or the either.

Rats! My birthday was three weeks ago!

I ended up snagging the 1.8D with the thought that I can upgrade in the future, and not have to be patient on my acquisition schedule. So far, I love it! Got some killer shots the other day when the cats left a snake in the dining room.

James — Woohoo! Enjoy your new lens! I’m sure you will.
Ooh, the colour of the floor is really interesting with that snake!

Nifty Fifties are great – I bought a brand new Canon for only £59 (’bout $35) – I use it way more than lens 10x this value. Nice shot BTW :D

Richard — I agree! They are totally sweet. Amazing value for money. I’ve started using my 24mm f/2.8 a bit more recently (has a very similar field of view on my cropped sensor to the 50mm on a full-frame), but 50mm is still my favourite. If I ever upgrade to full-frame I may need an 85mm to get the portrait shots I love so much from my current 50mm.
