It’s that time of year again! My attempts at photographing the fireworks this year were somewhat more successful than last year, I think you’ll agree. A significant part of that was arriving on time and setting up my tripod, rather than getting there after the fireworks start and trying to photograph them while running down the street.
This was the first good image I got before I decided turning my camera to a portrait framing was a much better option. This one is pretty much at the start of the fireworks and even though the framing is far from perfect, I kinda like it: I think it’s all the colours.
More (and better) shots in the days to come!
- Aperture: f/16
- Camera: NIKON D50
- Focal length: 24 mm
- ISO: 400
- Location: 33° 47.32′ 0″ S 151° 4.79′ 0″ E
- Shutter speed: 3 s
I really want to improve my photography. So, if you like my photos, please let me know why. If you don't like them, please let me know what you think would improve them. Thanks!

Kris – I had to look up Granny Smith Fest on Wikipedia to see what it was :) Now I know a little more about the apple’s I take to work with me several times a week :) Great shot of the fireworks and yes they turned out a lot better than last years.
To be honest I don’t know that much about the festival (although I just read the Wikipedia article too!). I just go because my friend who lived in Eastwood invited us last year for dinner and fireworks. :-P
That’s very, very nice, Kris! And the image is so sharp!
I agree, huge improvement over last year. That shot is fantastic!!
What I like about it (since you asked): good shutter speed, you captured the way fireworks look to us in real life in a single frame. On my monitor at that resolution, the ISO is surprisingly clear; there is very little grain to the image. To improve, I would like to see some shots where the fireworks take up the whole image. Maybe even just cropping this in Photoshop/GIMP would do it (or are you a purist? ;p ).
Thanks guys!
Lauren — Yeah, I didn’t mean to have the ISO on 400, but on 200. 400 is generally not too grainy depending on the quality of light. I was relieved that these didn’t end up grainy!
I wouldn’t say I’m a purist. I crop photos sometimes. Although I tend not to crop them before posting them here and then people have the opportunity to suggest better crops. I agree that the framing on this one is not so hot, but I’m also not sure where I would crop it to. Check out the next one and see what you think.
