Jenga Fallen

I wasn’t quick enough to catch it falling. In fact, it startled me so much that I squealed a bit each time. :-P

Thanks dinu, I do. My username is kristar3lla on Flickr. There’s not much on there though. I couldn’t really keep up with a photoblog and Flickr and I chose the photoblog to be my main thing. Flickr I use for events and stuff like that.

Kristarella, have you ever written a piece on optimizing for image search? I’d be very interested in your opinions on the subject. If I missed it as I looked through your site, my apologies… :)

Photo feedback (since you asked):

I think I would center the subject in this image, from its sharp focal point on the left to the distant blocks on the right. Really enjoy your use of the close focus on the subject, allowing it to blur into the distance (I’m sure there’s a technical phrase for that, but I don’t know what it is). I tried something with a similar focal point here recently (ignoring my lack of skills, and that the photo was taken with a phone, so the quality just cannot compare).

Anyhow – I’m a very tactile person, and when I look at this shot, my fingers remember the feel of Jenga blocks in my hands, so all in all I’d say this is a pretty great shot!

James — No, I haven’t written such a piece. I haven’t really thought about it much, to be honest. My photoblog has been the kind of selfish pursuit that hasn’t really thought much about SEO. Of course I love it if people enjoy my photography, but I kind of do it for the joy of it and to improve. Although feedback certainly helps improving and drawing traffic via search results might draw feedback…

Good suggestion on the framing. I should practice thinking more analytically about framing in post-processing as well as when taking the shot. Most of these shots were quite rushed as I tried to get the Jenga falling and I probably didn’t think “Hmm, a different crop would be good.” Here’s a different crop:

The term for the blur cause by a shallow depth of field is bokeh. I usually think of it as when lights make those blurry dots in the background, but I think it refers to the general blur as well. :-)

I like the fresh crop. I’ve been reading about the rule of thirds in photography… if the most interesting part of the image is 1/3 of the way through the image (either horizontally or vertically), it frames the photo nicely. In this case, that’s achieved with the set of blocks that are in focus.

I’ve learned a lot since my last comment here… enough to be impressed with the f stop on that lens. What lens is that?

I agree with James on the fresh crop. It give a much better composition. Overall I think this is are really great photos and I love the depth of field that you managed to capture. While you did not capture the action of the tower falling this is a particular it is a great showing of the aftermath.

James — Yeah, you were totally right about the crop. Good reason to keep posting on my photoblog: feedback & improvement! The lens is the Nikon 50mm f/1.8. I consider it (or the Canon counterpart) essential, it’s amazing value for money.

Jennifer — Thanks for you comment. :-)
