it’s how we treat god as god, then people who treat money or success as god will worship that

Ah, I begin to see.

Then... doing what Jesus says

I have heard that before, but not in the context that you have put it. It makes more sense to me now! We are going through the Sermon on the Mount right now and, boy, is it opening my eyes to new things! I love our new church and all the pastors there! They put things in such good historical context and explain very difficult passages--like about divorce and remarriage--in a way that seems quite accurate to me (like what God means for us to do instead of what "law" dictates). I'd love to see some of your notes since that's what we're studying at church right now! (sermons available as podcasts if you're interested!)

Hey Lauren, thanks for asking.

(Starting with a pre-amble to try to get to me point, bear with me!) I think that in the wider context, worship is relevant to everyone. If it's how we treat god as god, then people who treat money or success as god will worship that, we who try to seek the true God will worship (or attempt to) him. Since we fail to worship him correctly, he has given us Jesus, by whom we can worship.

I think that Grimmo meant that accepting Christ's worship means to accept/agree/proclaim him as the only true worshipper, our sin sacrifice. So yeah, you're right, becoming Christians is the first bit. Then (because the post was getting so long I only mentioned it in the last paragraph) doing what Jesus says. So, in the gospels he says whoever loves me will obey me, and the Sermon on the Mount gives some guidance as well, as does Paul's letters. I think in essence it's living in obedience to God.

If you're interested I can email you some of my notes from Matt 5-7.

I think in a way the discussion feels a bit circular: ask the question of worship and then the answer is believe and follow Christ. So you think, but that's what I was trying to do!
I think it emphasises the place of obedience and giving your whole heart/life to God. We have huge freedoms under Christ to do whatever we want, but whatever we do it should be for his glory.
