During one of several trips to the Art Gallery of New South Wales in my final years of High School I saw a very clever artwork. It comprised of two pieces, one was an image of Jesus made up of tiny pictures of Buddha in different colours and tones. The other piece was an image of Buddha made up of tiny images of Jesus. They weren’t just any images of Jesus and Buddha, they were exactly the same, the small ones repeated on one piece made up the other and vice versa. I can’t seem to find any reference to them on Google or the art gallery website. Although I possibly don’t agree with the meaning or concept behind their creation I loved the end visual result. Since seeing that artwork I have had a greater respect for the kind of image mosaics that make a larger picture using smaller images.
Image Mosaic is a fun tool that creates a mosaic of an image that you upload. I uploaded an image of myself and received a mosaic back that contains pictures of fruit, people, adds for Kit Kat and who knows what else? The image I received back was a lot large than the one I’ve uploaded here so you can actually zoom into great detail. There isn’t much information on the site about the tool, I’d be interested to know where it draws its images from and whether it adjusts the tones of images or just picks appropriate ones. It’s very cool, I highly recommend it!
Thanks to The Foo for bringing this to my attention!
Update: Heard from the creator, the images are pulled from Flickr and they’re not changed, it chooses the best coloured ones.
